Gums treatment

Gums (Gingivae) are the soft tissue that surrounds the teeth, and healthy gums are pink in color. Gums (gingivae) are the most ignorant part when it comes to the health of the oral cavity since most gum diseases are pain-free, therefore many gum diseases go unnoticed until they create a problem.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, you should immediately consult your dentist to evaluate your oral health.

  1. Bleeding gums
  2. Swollen gums
  3. Red or discolored gums
  4. Long teeth or gums away from the teeth
  5. Mobile teeth
  6. Bad breath (halitosis)

It is important to seek consultation for your gums as for your teeth. If the gums are not treated timely, gum disease progresses to a level that causes irreversible destruction, that is difficult to repair.

Swollen gums can be due to many reasons, such as hormonal changes, pregnancy, infection or certain medications also cause gums enlargement, therefore it is important to visit the dentist for proper diagnosis and thus treatment if required.

Do your gums bleed on brushing or biting apple/food?

Many medicated toothpastes are easily available and advertised to stop gums bleeding. Remember NEVER use medicated toothpaste without your dentist’s recommendation.

Gums bleeding is like a blessing in disguise. Since gums bleeding is an alarming sign that something is wrong with the gums & you should visit your dentist. Using medicated toothpaste to stop bleeding will not treat your gums, it will just mask your gum disease symptoms. Patients think gums are healthy now with the use of medicated toothpaste but in reality gum disease further progresses causing irreversible damage.

Common treatments used to treat gum diseases are

  1. Teeth Scaling (cleaning)
  2. Root curettage (deep cleaning)
  3. Gingivectomy
